CineStill 400D Update – 10,000 Backer Update

CineStill 400D Update – 10,000 Backer Update

Three weeks ago, there was a plethora of film photography related news, from the release of Kodak Gold 200 in 120 and Japan Camera Hunter’s 400-Speed Slide film and, of course, the announcement from CineStill for their 400D film stock. Their crowdfunding campaign proved a wild success and quickly grew to allow the release of 400D in 120 and 4×5. But they also teased at a surprise when they hit that magically 10K backer mark. Well, the wait is over.

CineStill is excited to announce a new film format for our400Dynamicfilm stock: 400D in 220! The FILMMAKER Crowdfunding Campaign is extended for one more week to allow the community to achieve this goal. 400Dynamic is a 400 ISO daylight-balanced colour film that CineStill is making available to photographers for the first time. Because of the incredible response and support from the analogue community, 400D in 35mm, 120 medium formats, and 4×5 large format has been fully funded — and now that we reached 10,000 backers, we are unlocking this film in the beloved 220 formats, making it possible to shoot a new colour film in all the cameras that use 220.

Pentax 67 Shooters rejoice; your camera already natively supports 220 films!

CineStill has always been passionate about making films more accessible and has been investigating how to make this format available to photographers again. 220 film was initially introduced in the 1960s and has only been available through expired film stocks and very few black and white film manufacturers in recent years. It is the same width as 120 films. Still, it has double the length (144 cm), allowing photographers to have twice the number of exposures per roll, making it an ideal film format for wedding, documentary, and commercial photographers. If determined, there is actual demand through the support of this campaign; 400D in 220 will only be available in limited quantities initially as we assess the scale of production for this format. This means 220 will be exclusive to the FILM MAKER Campaign at first. We need the community to show us how many backers want 220film. This helps justify the resources, time, and training it takes to make this film format available again. If successful, we expect to have completed testing and begin the manufacturing process in the fourth quarter of 2022, with expectations for fulfilment starting in December 2022. If lack of demand or development roadblocks prevents this from being a viable option, CineStill will provide backers of these 220 tiers with double the amount of 120 rolls in return. The FILMMAKER Crowdfunding Campaign for 400Dynamic has raised over $650,000and, more importantly, has garnered over 10,000 backers, which has made it one of the most successful analogue photography crowdfunding campaigns of all time. The analogue photography market has proven once again to be growing and thriving. CineStill is dedicated to bringing innovation and making creative tools available and accessible to a community that demands them. This groundswell of support from the analogue community has made this film a reality — and now allows us to try something that has been made possible in years.
